Fun Winter Bucket List for the Kids (BEFORE New Baby Arrives)

Our Easy Winter Bucket List to promote family time & keep the boredom away

So this pregnancy not being our first rodeo, we know that the home dynamics are going to change for our little family soon. Subtly in some ways, as well as drastically in other ways. While some changes will be drastic, but only temporarily. You know, things like parents’ disposable time and energy for one is definitely one of those temporarily drastic entries – although truth be told, six years on, and the energies have never truly returned to form. But Mike and I know this, and are not going to get caught with our pants down. Sure we’ve made it work in the past and always tried to ensure Morgan-Lee had my eyes and ears and love when she needed it, even with a little Parker-Grace newborn baby bossing the house around. But something tells me we won’t be able to just wing it this time. I mean, we will officially be outnumbered this time around, and the rain falls, temperatures drop, and kiddy cabin fever looms! 🙂

So what do I do when I’m feeling like I need to get my ass into gear? I make lists! And then I either slip them into a nice little plastic sleeve file to make it all official, or I stick them up in the house to make it public and declarative! And then, I tick those puppies off one by one with a great, fat, satisfying tick! Man, I thrive on lists. I need them. It’s the only thing that can get my busy little brain to stand at attention and suck in its gut. But I digress. The point is, we basically only have like 7 weeks before our little coconut makes her much anticipated debut! And that’s not a whole lots of time, epsecialy considering all the home and birth prep we still need to do as well. And to make it just that much trickier, we’re in the heart of winter. And an unpredictable winter at that, thanks to Western Cape’s current drought.

So we are definitely not going to be winging it this time, and have come up with a nice little Winter entertainment bucket list of things to do with the kids before baby comes. And, why yes, you’re most welcome to use it too. In fact, you don’t need to have a baby on the way to find it useful either, this also makes a perfect fun Winter Bucket list for you and your family!

What I love about it is that it’s not heavy on the pocket, are all pretty simple yet fun enough to get their little imaginations going, and promote quality family time.

We’ve already started to tick some of it off…
Thankfully the rains came and this meant puddle jumps were in order…

First (proper) fire… (we’ve had several fires already, but this is proper weather to now truly appreciate those roaring flames)

These winter fires include crosswords and cuddles with Gran by the fire…

Oudoor movies with blankets, hot chocolate and great snacks…

And clearly they are enjoying it (especially that outdoor movie one – they’ve been begging for a repeatever since!). In fact, putting out our intentions seems to have inspired them to add their own little ideas to the list too. For instance, just the other night, Morgy bought herself some extra cuddle time with mom, by saying she needs dad to carry her to bed, and so will wait by me for dad to return from his piggy back trip with Parker. Seizing the extra talk time with me, she then quickly jumped into the conversation with, “ok, talk to me about a tea party! Can I serve the tea? Can we bake the cookies? We need a special blanket, and we need to dress up…Ohhh, pretend you don’t know me, and you just see me walking by and then you invite me to your tea party. Then we become best friends! And then..”… She went on for a while. I smiled and pulled her in closer, because this girl speaks my language clearly.

So yes, whilst my pubis symphasis dysfunction is really making me actually want to bunker down this winter already, I have a world of inspiration in my two(actually three) little beasties. This winter will not slip by un-carpediam’ed!

So what do we have planned? Have a look-see here:

      1. Bake Pumpkin cookies
      2. Make pumpkin Soup
      3. First fire
      4. Build a reading fort with lights
      5. Hot cocoa beach sunset
      6. Go apple picking
      7. Play in the leaves
      8. Make a leaf journal – collect and trace over them
      9. Indoor camp party (a family fun favourite!)
      10. Outdoor movie with chai tea
      11. Star gazing with apple cider
      12. Find the maze
      13. Go Puddle jumping
      14. Winter Waffle bake-off
      15. Indoor tea party

And then as an extra side, here is our outing bucket list for before baby comes. You know, aside from the usual other places there are to frequent during winter. Also we know that there’s still a lot to do in prep for baby and are not going to tire ourselves out by going over the top with things. Or trying to cram it all in. So just these we’re committing to, and the rest we’ll play by ear.

Kiddy Outing Bucket list before Baby comes:

      • Butterfly World – This has become somewhat of a tradition in our house. And say that very lightly, because, it’s only been the second time. But whatever. The tradition is that we take the soon-to-be-an-elder-sibling to enjoy the animals of Butterfly World, preceded/followed by a lunch, and where just the whole dy is about them, and indulging their interests. You want to go look at the snakes again? For the 14th time? Sure, let’s go! You want to hang with this bird for half and hour. No worries, I’ll camp out here with you. The point is, we pour all our love and attention on the kids. Fill up their cups. (by the way, this one is also ticked off nicely already)

      • SANCOB – This is for Pax, our little animal lover, who wants to love on and save every animal that may need it. Valuable traits that we’d like to encourage, empower and support, and this I think is a fertile place for just that kind of mindset of her’s.

      • Planetarium – This one is definitely for Morgy. She has been begging me to go check out a meteor shower for the longest time this year. And I have unfortunately missed all the meteor showers visible to the Southern Hemisphere for this year already. So the next best thing? The planetarium, of course! It’s been something I’ve been plotting for more than a month, in fact. And what’s even cooler is what I didnt know is that the Planterium had an awesome tech makeover. So I’m even more keen to check it out again!

Here’s to snuggling up and enjoying each other this Winter, (without the classic “Im bored” song), and making beautiful memories out of even the seemingly mundane and ordinary moments of life.
